Woods

promotional picture case study

The goal of this photoshoot was to recreate the look and feel of the promotional pictures of Mattel’s discontinued doll line, Ever After High. The characters of this line are the children of famous fairytales characters, and their main conflict is whether they decide to follow the footsteps of their parents or not. The subject of this photoshoot is the 2013 signature line Cerise Hood, daughter of the Little Red Riding Hood.

The Criteria

I came up with three criteria to fulfill to achieve the look of the above-mentioned promotional pictures.

1- Prominent shapes used by lights and shadows.

In these pictures the line shines through cutouts casting interesting shapes in the environment or the dolls themselves

2- Use of Warm Light.

While the first set of pictures, the warm light is subtle, Later dolls were promoted in a set with much warmer lighting, making it seem like the sun is setting

3- The set looks hand-made.

Trees, plants, and other structures, look like they are cut from paper, painted with watercolors and the details were drawn with a pen.
