The Experience Magazine

For the 57th published issue of The Experience Magazine, I developed the visual execution of its promotional campaign based on the already established mid-century, old TV guide-inspired concept. Drawing from vintage typography, retro color palettes, and editorial layout conventions, I translated the theme into a visually unified campaign across social media graphics, printed handouts, posters, and a promotional zine, which evolved slightly as the aesthetic decisions for the next issue were being made.

Club Rush

Social Media Campaign

Club Rush is a college-wide event hosted across multiple campuses, where student organizations present themselves and recruit members. The objective was to promote the magazine’s presence, clearly communicate event dates, and ensure visual distinction within a highly saturated event environment.

Student Submissions

Poster & Handout

I developed posters and handouts to drive student submissions, designing them for visibility in crowded campus events and brief classroom presentations. The layouts prioritized hierarchy and clarity, translating the mid-century, TV guide-inspired aesthetic into bold, attention-grabbing compositions that communicated key information immediately.

The posters were produced in limited quantities for placement in libraries and student centers, functioning as more permanent visual anchors across campus. In contrast, the handouts were printed in black and white using a laser printer to allow for high-volume distribution during events and classroom outreach. The visible dot texture and high-contrast format maintained the vintage tone while making the materials cost-effective and accessible to a wider audience.

I directed and edited a promotional video introducing the magazine, featuring members of the team (including myself) discussing its mission, submission process, and the benefits of being published. Designed with a light, humorous tone, the video balanced clarity with personality to make the submission guidelines feel accessible rather than intimidating. From scripting and shot direction to editing and pacing, I shaped the piece to feel engaging, informative, and aligned with the magazine’s vintage-inspired campaign.

Promotional Video

To continue the push for student submissions, I designed a black-and-white zine featuring a poem and selected student artwork from the latest published issue. While the broader campaign referenced mid-century editorial design, the zine intentionally shifted toward a punk, DIY aesthetic.

Printed using a standard laser printer, the visible halftone dots and high-contrast textures became part of the visual language, reinforcing its raw, handmade quality. The decision to produce it in black and white was both conceptual and practical — offering an accessible, low-cost alternative that allowed students to preview the magazine without distributing limited full copies. A strategy that had already worked for the team, seeing the success with the black and white handouts. The layout balanced expressive composition with readability, creating a tactile piece that felt intimate and collectible.

The Countdown

Social Media Campaign

To drive final submissions, I designed a series of countdown posts leading up to the submission deadline. These posts marked a deliberate visual shift from the warm tones and black-and-white palette of previous materials, embracing bold colors, gradients, and playful DIY elements, including halftone textures.

Some posts featured curious facts about the magazine to engage the audience while reminding students and followers that submissions would close soon. The series balanced attention-grabbing aesthetics with clear messaging, creating a sense of urgency while maintaining the campaign’s eclectic, student-focused tone.

Working on this magazine was an incredible opportunity to explore both structured and experimental design, and to see how visuals can bring a publication to life beyond its pages. I’m excited to continue contributing to The Experience Magazine, now collaborating on the layout for the next edition, and grateful for the chance to grow creatively alongside a talented team.
